Challenge
Sol-Lux needed a solar solution to power their retractable awning with a custom footprint that matched their design requirements. The system had to generate sufficient power even in partially shaded environments. Additionally, the design required an ultra-thin connection — no thicker than the solar panel itself (approximately 0.18 inches).
Approach
PowerFilm’s amorphous silicon technology provided an ideal starting point due to its strong low-light performance and shade tolerance. Its inherent flexibility made it well suited for integration into the awning design without adding weight or bulk.
With extensive experience in custom solar and connector design, PowerFilm also developed low-profile connection options to seamlessly integrate the panel into the awning motor housing.
Solution
When a stock panel producing 5Wh per day proved insufficient, PowerFilm engineered a custom solution generating approximately 6.7Wh per day. The design met Sol-Lux’s footprint, curved mounting surface, and ultra-thin connection requirements. The result is a smart window shade powered entirely by integrated solar — reducing wiring complexity while helping lower energy costs.
Testimonial
“We first conceived our Sol-Lux Eos solar-powered, autonomous window awning over 10 years ago. At that time, we were fortunate enough to identify PowerFilm as the nation’s leading manufacturer of flexible solar panels. We began the design dialog, received samples, and confirmed our ideas were viable. This kept the dream alive and once our parent company, Carefree of Colorado was in a position to strike, we picked up where we left off and PowerFilm was ready to help. Their capable engineering staff worked closely with Sol-Lux to deliver a custom solar solution that meets our needs exactly.”
