Low-Speed Electric Vehicle Solar Integration
How a purpose-built solar solution extended range, improved uptime, and reduced maintenance for GEM vehicles.

Challenge
GEM’s low-speed electric vehicles (LSEVs) are widely used across campuses, resorts, and commercial environments — but frequent short trips, stop-start driving, and long idle periods placed heavy strain on battery life. They needed a solar solution that could help extend range and reduce battery degradation without impacting the vehicle’s design or performance. The panels also had to be extremely lightweight, low-profile, and seamlessly integrate into the vehicle’s 12V system.
Approach
PowerFilm collaborated closely with the GEM engineering team to develop a tailored rooftop panel that matched their vehicle footprint, voltage requirements, and real-world usage. We engineered a thin, flexible solar module that could handle sun exposure, vibration, and partial shading — while maintaining a clean visual design. Performance testing validated the solar system’s ability to offset idle drain and improve daily operational range.
Solution
The final product integrates directly into GEM’s roof structure and ties into the onboard power system without driver interaction. This solar setup now supports battery maintenance and energy capture throughout the day, even while parked. GEM’s commercial and fleet customers report fewer battery issues, improved uptime, and increased range per charge. Thousands of vehicles now ship with PowerFilm panels installed.
Testimonial
"GEM has been committed to clean mobility for over two decades. Partnering with Power Film allowed us to bring that commitment to life through smart, renewable charging."
